Epping Forest Photography Walk 2

Prices start at £150.00

Note: I can usually fit people in within a couple of weeks.
We shall see the Iron Age Hill Fort and scheduled monument
AMBRESBURY BANKS – BLACKWEIR POND (the ‘lost pond’) – LONG RUNNING – WARREN WOOD – SCENES FROM THE WITCHER - HIGH BEECH – KINGS OAK SPEEDWAY (the historic origins of speedway)
We start by meeting in the Corporation of London Jacks Hill car park, off the B172 – Coppice Row - between Wake Arms roundabout and Theydon Bois, postcode CM16 5HS. This is at the Epping Forest GATE N28 forest access point.
You can either drive and park at Jacks Hill car park or take the Central Line to Loughton and make your way by the number 66 bus to the Wakes Arms roundabout stop, and walk 4 minutes from there to our start point.
During the photography stops we will have plenty of time to discuss picture making and explore our creativity. This is an extremely varied walk taking in the beauty of Epping Forest, with its wonderful glades, like Long Running, to the ancient Iron Age Fort of Ambresbury Banks, to the early twentieth century remains of the first speedway track – Kings Oak Speedway.
This walk is suitable for non-photographers who just want to travel at a leisurely pace with plenty of time to stop and enjoy the history and scenery of Epping Forest.
We will find the trail to take us to Ambresbury, Banks a similar encampment to Loughton Camp. According to legend, it is the site of the last stand by Boudica (Boadicea) of the Iceni, against the Romans in the year 61. Imagined in a landscape with fewer trees, these camps would have had better visibility for defense, but today they wouldn't serve well for defense. The fort encircles an area of 11 acresand is surrounded by a single bank of 6 ft in height, together with a ditch. There is a small counterscarp bank on the outside lip of the ditch.
Then we find Long Running, an open area of former heathland and is located near to the Camp. It's covered with heather, sedge and purple moor grass and makes for a pleasant interlude on sunny days.
We trek forward through the Warren Wood and following the trail head for High Beach and a welcome opportunity to have a tea or coffee at the tea hut.
We will have the opportunity to find the remnants of the world’s first speedway track, which can be found behind the Kings Oak public house.
We may be lucky enough to see a herd of deer as we pass through the Great Monk’s Wood, that roam through this part of the ancient forest. Monk Wood is certainly rather different from the woodland to its south. Firstly, there are fewer lopped or pollard trees.
We will embark on a circular walk of the central part of Epping Forest that will be approximately 4 miles in length. Please bring suitable walking boots or shoes, and note a certain times of the year particular areas of the forest can be muddy. Some of the things we will visit and see are:
-
Jack’s Hill
-
Long Running
-
Ambresbury Banks
-
Warren Wood
-
Sunshine Plain
-
High Beach
-
The Kings Oak Speedway
-
Clay Ride
-
Blackweir Hill
-
Blackweir Pond
-
Great Monk Wood
-
Deer Shelter Plain
-
Copely Plain
The walk will be approximately 4 miles, but we will be walking slowly as we shoot photographs along the way. We can stop at High Beach for refreshment, and provides another interesting photo opportunity setting as we are quite high up and have good views and we are also adjacent to the remnants of the first speedway track, with the first meeting held on 19th February 1928. I am your photowalk guide, so if you have any questions about your camera settings or creative and composition approaches we can take our time to go through that work.
On the day I will be setting 5 topic ideas, depending on the time of year, for you to try and photograph whilst on the walk. This is for your entertainment but also to spark creativity.
